With Sauce, Syrup and Ice Cream
There are many ways to serve ice cream and perhaps the simplest way to serve it is with a little bit of goodness on top. A sundae is an ice cream dessert that consists of one or more scoops of ice cream topped with sauce or syrup. They are also topped with sprinkles, whipped cream, or fruits. Below are some popular sundaes that are also some of our favourites.
Banana Split
A banana split is made with a banana cut length-wise that is laid in a dish with scoops of ice cream served in a row between the split fruit. It is then garnished with nuts, whipped cream and cherries. While two of the desserts in this list are specifically served in glass, this dessert is served in a dish. The dessert was conceived in the city of Latrobe and was invented in 1904.
Dame Blanche
The dessert literally means "White lady" in French, and it is very much like a sundae. It consists of vanilla ice cream with whipped cream and warm molten chocolate. Dame Blanche is the name used in Netherlands but in Germany, it is called Coupe Dänemark. If you ever host dinner parties and have a sundae like this on the menu, do not call it a sundae, call it a Dame Blanche and impress your friends.
American Parfait
Nope, it is not the traditional French dessert. The popular American variant is made by layering parfait cream, ice cream and sometimes gelatines in a tall, clear glass and is often topped off with whipped cream, fruit and sometimes liqueurs.
Knickerbocker Glory
A sundae served in a tall glass in the U.K. First described in the 1930s, the dessert consists of ice cream, gelatine, cream; meringue, fruits and even liquor served in a tall glass in layers and topped off with syrup, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry. The name could have come from the knee-length trousers of the time.
