For cops, good job offset by bad job
Sept 13 — An Iranian man made a shocking getaway from the Petaling Jaya court yesterday morning, barely 48 hours after a fugitive Colombian gang leader, who staged a dramatic escape from police custody nine months ago, was recaptured.
His escape was shockingly similar to a Zambian woman’s escape on December 2 last year from the same court, the same day the Colombian escaped. In another startling coincidence, the Iranian man and Zambian woman both escaped right under the noses of policemen escorting them at the court compound.
Both were also being investigated for drug smuggling. Although Ops Cantas had scored big, and the police redeemed pride with the capture of the 22-year-old Colombian, the escape of the Iranian has marred their reputation.
The arrest of the Colombian man followed the formation of a police task-force by Serdang police under Ops Cantas to solve rising house break-ins in the district. On Monday, the task force raided an apartment in Taman Dato Ahmad Razali, Ampang. "
The raid was conducted after our intelligence and operations teams found that the apartment was occupied by Latin Americans suspected of being involved in theft. It was also where the stolen goods were believed to have been kept," Selangor police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said.
The police detained a Colombian couple and another woman from Costa Rica. "In the apartment, we seized various stolen goods such as laptops, cameras, handbags and various foreign currencies." Checks revealed the Colombian man was the wanted Sana Bria Floria Jorge Luis, who escaped from a moving police vehicle while being transported from Shah Alam to the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court last year.
Three other Colombians suspected burglars were with him when he fled. All the suspects were chain-cuffed but somehow freed themselves and fled from the vehicle when it stopped at a traffic lights junction. Luis escaped with another suspect, Martin Rodriguez Yerson David, 26, who is still at large.
Initial investigations revealed David had since left the country through the Thailand border, while Luis stayed on and continued his criminal activities with new gang members. Mohd Shukri said police are also looking for the remaining Latin American gang members.
"I believe there are more of them, and we will hunt them down." Selangor police have so far have detained 12 Latin American criminals this year. "Last year, we caught 28 of them. They are professionals, and are slick when committing crime. They move in small groups to avoid detection."
